tomorrow i'm hoping to squeeze in an etsy update. i have little crocus and bluebell and scilla forcing kits put together for my shop. i just need to photograph them and create the listings. i'm kind of sad that i didn't think of the idea earlier in the fall so i could have ordered some of these little beauties. oh well. i'll know better next autumn. my kits include three wee little forcing glasses of varying shapes. they're adorable. i'm pretty excited. i'm going to force some crocuses myself. i've never forced them before (though i have grown them a number of times outdoors). it looks like i'm not the only one feeling the winter blah. maybe this bodes well for my little shop. i don't feel bad about what i just said because growing things is cheer-making. and i if i can help support myself by making others cheerful i think it's a good.

i meant to write a wee post the other day. and then i started this one but was interrupted. and now i can't remember what i was going to write.

a summary of the last few days...

killed a possum with the car which made me blue. my wee mother repaired my 1920s singer sewing machine which made me unblue. well. unbluish. the wind picked up. the wind died down. the frost appeared on window glass. moss turned green after the recent rains. ricked a small amount of wood for father. was hugged by sister. packed books in boxes. swayed to the ipod under the bare bulb of my great-grandmother's lamp. the one with the rococo scene of the courting couple. looks like a fragonard rip-off. but it's sweet. had some hot baths. stayed in the water until my hands turned prune-y and the water cool. read some poems i wrote in iowa. cringed at them. ate hazelnuts in bed. listened to a storm raging outside. tomorrow i'll go to a party and pretend to be happy about the tallying of another year gone.

to bed.

oh and here's a camera obscura song. twee but quite pretty nonetheless.

i'm taking refuge under the duvet and considering a hot bath. it is cold.

turkey was had. pie was had. thai dinner was had. we planned on seeing a movie but there was a rather long gap between the end of our thai food feast and the beginning of the movie. and there was not a single coffee shop open in which to loiter. so we came home instead. oh well. i can make my own coffee! part of my christmas loot was a press pot and a wee coffee hand mill. super! and also: yum.

i didn't finish the creation of one of sister's gifts. i was embroidering something for her. the fabric i was embroidering was giving me trouble. i stayed up late christmas eve trying to get the project done. i was determined! but then my eyes went all wobbly and i found i was making more mistakes than useful stitches. i went to set aside my work to take a break and found that i had embroidered the piece to my pajamas (good work mc mullen!). i actually embroidered my pajamas to the work twice before i decided to pack things in for the night and admit defeat. i also pricked my finger a number of times and drew blood. ah well.

sister gifted me with three antique german porcelain dolls. they are creepy as hell and also very beautiful. they were  among my etsy favorites and i was very pleased to get them. the photos below are representative.

i like these very much. they came with the excavation dirt still intact. i might leave them thus. i might not. haven't decided.

oh. and here's a picture of one of the celluloid silhouettes sister gifted to me. it's the one with the stag. i luuuuurve it.

of course the best part of today was hanging out in pajamas whilst drinking irish coffees and listening to sister play her concertina. yay!

now i'll read dylan thomas' a child's christmas in wales as i do every christmas.

wellidy. i hope your day was a happy one.

g'night.

it's cold. i'm going to make fleur de sel caramel in a bit.

as usual my sister's gift-giving zeal got the best of her and she made me open one of my presents early (i did not object). she gifted me with two vintage figurines. they're beautiful! they are woodland silhouettes of thinest celluloid and look like they're carved of piano ivory. one is a man riding a stag under a leafy canopy. the other is a hunter with his hounds. they're so perfect and it was such a thoughtful gift though not surprising considering how very well my sister knows my tastes. i'm not sure where i will display them. they're so delicate! i might have to find some wee glass domes for them.

we didn't put up a tree so things are not feeling terribly christmas-y hereabouts. but sister strung lights above her bed. those are cheery. i wish we had a woodstove like my father's. hmph.

wellidy. for those who celebrate christmas i wish you a happy one. and for those who don't a happy day anyway.

g'night.

saw let the right one in this evening. loved it. it's a new favorite i think. and i'm not a huge fan of vampire films either. i will perhaps elaborate tomorrow. but now i'm going to work on some embroidery.

public transportation is really frustrating sometimes. especially here. today a bus driver left me stranded at a transfer point because he decided to depart two minutes earlier than scheduled. and what's really annoying is that i walked all the way up to the door of the bus and made eye contact with him. but he still drove away. i'm calling his superior tomorrow and snitching on him. my day was entirely wasted because of him. i had to wait another hour for the next bus and by the time i got to my destination the office was closed. needless to say my nose was really bent out of shape. (heee. it's always bent out of shape!)

after i caught the bus back into slo i remembered that a concert* was happening which i really really wanted to go to. i knew that i couldn't go though because bus service stops at 8:30 and the concert was at 8:00. i was really feeling grouchy by then. i almost shed tears. (<---i'm not kidding.) but i had an americano followed shortly by a mulled cider. and then my disposition was a wee bit sunnier.

tomorrow i really will try to post photos from my mexico trip. i made copious notes for blog entries whilst in mexico so that blogging about the trip would be easier. i've no excuse for not posting. i'm just being laaaaaazy. someone needs to give me a swift kick in my bottom. i'd do it myself but...i'm too lazy. also i'm not that flexible.

wellidy. i shall go now.

adieu.

*the awesome murs. but turns out the show is actually tomorrow. however i'm still sad. bus service on the weekend is even more limited. and i don't have any friends who still live in slo so there isn't a house i can crash at. sob.

i took lola out for a stretch last night. the little persimmon tree on the corner next to hazel's house is spangled with wee fruits. they're squat and cushion-shaped. the persimmons in the alley are long and pointed. or would be if the tree  hadn't been severely pruned and had actually set fruit this year. anyway. i pocketed two of the little flattish fruits. crosses mark the top. the curves are covered in bloom.

the air was cold. my breath issued in clouds. mist rose from the ground. i hope tonight's walk is no less lovely.

wellidy. i go.

strange fruit...

the pomegranate set quite a lot of fruit this year. they're huge and red and cheery. i brought one indoors the other afternoon. i sat in bed picking the wee seeds out and eating them while reading about moomins. very sweet.

a little parcel arrived for me today. inside was an animal of unknown origins who seems to have a fondness for oranges. cute. there's a bit of a language barrier as he only appears to speak russian. but it shouldn't be a problem. we get along fine.

a few days ago i went to check on my little succulent garden. whilst doing so i noticed a wild strawberry had ripened. it was no larger than my fingernail. but the taste was intense.

wellidy.

here's a song that has nothing to do with the above post. but it's a good one.
