the day of brother's party my niece and nephews alerted me to the presence of a barnstormer. actually two. i've seen barnstormers flying overhead before. infrequently. today they were back. at first i could only see one. the orange one. then another came into view. it was white. it landed behind the asistencia. the orange one continued to fly over me. i put my hand up to cover the sun. after several passes the pilot must have seen me. he had been flying very low. he wagged his wings at me. then he gave me the most awesome of shows. he flew to a point just over me and pulled up hard. he flew vertically until it sounded like his engine stalled. then he flipped over backwards and tumbled down in a spiral. then he flew toward the south-east. he made a turn and headed back toward me. when he was nearly to me he turned upside down and flew over my head in that position! he did tricks above me for about forty minutes. it was amazing. i just stood there the entire time with a strawberry seedling in my hand and my mouth open. my eyes on the plane. finally he passed overhead and wagged his wings farewell. i waved with all of my might. for a moment i wished he would land and pick me up. the plane was so orange! and handled so deftly! sigh. anyway after he waved to me he also flew very low behind the asistencia. he was below the tops of the sycamores! he was obscured by them. then suddenly he cleared them to the north-east and shot up vertically. gunned his engine as he fell from the sky. and as he came out of his tumble the white plane rose from behind the trees. i suppose it had been refueling or something. then both raced toward the south-west. it was lovely!
went for a walk. from the little house near the park-- the one that used to be surrounded by fruiting thicket-- i could hear a woman's voice issuing. as i neared i saw her. completely oblivious to my presence in the street. amber nimbus in her upswept hair. singing in a drawling see-saw voice "i wish my baby was born." tipping and tailing beans from a colander or washing the dinner dishes. dunno. but water was running. her hands were wet. moved them back and forth across the window. above the blue ship-lapped siding of the wee house. that someone's blood there on his wing....
i love the keening in her voice. so gorgeous. it's a lament for her brother. drowned at sea.
a good evening was had. as predicted it was rife with thai food. and luverly company. i approve.
You
are thirty-two
only once in your life, and though
July comes
too quickly, you pray for
the overbearing
heat to pass. It does, and
the year turns
before it holds still for
even a moment.
Beyond the last carob
or Joshua tree
the magpie flashes his sudden
wings; a second
flames and vanishes into the pale
blue air.
the margins of the road look blurry at high speeds. but my eyes lit on something there and the image was clear. a spotted fawn. dead one. very small and very tawny. down a pace there was a dead vulture. well.
i realized i hadn't much eaten today. i went to put the wet clothes in the dryer and suddenly felt a bit dizzy. a sandwich was made. i was excited about this sandwich. it had crispy kosher dill slices. dill pickles are to be praised. they should be feted. showered with myrrh and gold and such. so. made the sanny. sat to eat it. it was the saltiest most inedible piece of work. i don't know what happened. i blame the turkey. the pickles shall not be implicated. though they aren't the best pickles ever. that title belongs to the pickles at canter's deli. they're one of the few excuses i might use to venture to more southern climes. not such a fan of so cal. but now we're off topic. to sum up: i'm still hungry. lola ate my sanny remainder. fin.
it's chilly tonight. fog settled on the mountains earlier. the moon rose above it. moon was apricot pale. fog was mauve and grey and taupe below it. so very pretty. the air was intensely scented with sycamore. dew was on the dry straw. everything smelled amazing. i wanted to keep walking tonight. but again lola got tuckered out. so.
